    Windows Explorer Crashes

I have Win200Pro SP4. A few days ago each time I try to delete a file or right click a file in Windows Explorer it crashes with an Application Exception message. The Dr Watson log shows the following each time (or similar) -
    Application exception occurred:
    App: explorer.exe (pid=1372)
    When: 9/7/2004 @ 15:12:51.052
Exception number: 0eedfade (always this exception)

Lots more of course. Task list in case it is relevant -
    0 Idle.exe
    8 System.exe
    176 smss.exe
    204 CSRSS.exe
    224 WINLOGON.exe
    252 SERVICES.exe
    264 LSASS.exe
    476 svchost.exe
    528 spoolsv.exe
    556 CCEVTMGR.exe
    628 CDANTSRV.exe
    644 isafe.exe
    380 DKService.exe
    684 svchost.exe
    748 NAVAPSVC.exe
    756 NPROTECT.exe
    864 nvsvc32.exe
    884 pntsvc.exe
    944 mstask.exe
    1120 NOPDB.exe
    1160 tardisnt.exe
    1212 UdServe.exe
    1240 vsmon.exe
    936 winmgmt.exe
    900 svchost.exe
    952 point32.exe
    1516 Directcd.exe
    1556 CREATE~1.exe
    1592 DUMeter.exe
    1612 qvp32.exe
    1344 JupitCo.exe
    1652 ccApp.exe
    1692 WFXSNT40.exe
    1712 zlclient.exe
    1740 internat.exe
    1748 Netscp.exe
    1776 CopernicDesktop.exe
    1656 acrotray.exe
    1764 Ghrone.exe
    1832 Economist.exe
    1936 insight.exe
    912 WinChimes2_0.ex.exe
    1644 ClipTrakker.exe
    1400 MSOFFICE.exe
    1372 explorer.exe
    992 drwtsn32.exe
    0 _Total.exe

Only change in the days before this occured was to install "Copernic Desktop Search" - have uninstalled it but made no difference.

I tried doing a Windows Repair booting from Win2000 Setup floppies and using an up-to-date Repair disk but the repair process reported that it could not see the repair file (the disk is OK as far as I can see) so tried a repair direct from the Win2000 CD. No change.

I tried expanding Explorer.exe and copying it over Explorer.exe in the WINNT folder (in a Safe Mode command prompt) - no change.

Before I do the next obvious thing and reformat the HD - a hell of a job - would appreciate any advice on alternatives

Have you run the usual spyware/adware detectors:
    Ad-Aware SE Personal
    Spybot - Search and Destroy
    HijackThis
    ?

I can't find any relevant reference on TechNet to your problem...

    Thanks John,

I had not tried those but downloaded Spybot and ran it - but only found lots of cookies, nothing else.

I also did a search in Google which turned up that others have had the same problem but no one found any answers.

So looks like it is reformat for me!

    All the best,

    Noel

    Noel,
I know I've seen this but can't remember where. Is win2k fully patched and all your other application software up to date?

    Thank you Joe,

Yes, I am careful about keeping Windows up to date and have installed each patch as it is released. Also MSoft Office. As far as I know all other programs are up to date.

    Noel,

Now I remember. I think it had to do with XP2 SP-2 and DivX. DivX needed to be updated. BTW, have you tried to contact Copernic or look at their support site?

    Re: Windows Explorer Crashes

    Thanks Joe,

However I am running Win2000 and do not have DivX. Had not thought to go to the Copernic site but have now - could see nothing helpful, but have sent an email to their support. I hope they come up with something. So far all my enquiries are taking me nowhere except to see that many others have had the same or similar problem - but no one seems to have a solution!

    Best wishes,

    Noel
