    On MP3's tags....

When ripping CD's, MP3 audio files can hold information on tags that are normally assigned to the artist name, genre and so on. This tags are the equivalent to doc properties on packages like MS Word, MS Excel and the such. Can someone recommend software to read and edit those tags by inputting the mp3 file name as argument. I have seen DJ's around witht that kind of program but I was wondering whether lower level code is available. Any info on this matter will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Maybe this <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware program will do the job:
    Mp3tag 1.26 Mb
    Version: 2.24
    Dated: 26 August, 2004
    Terms: Donationware
Language: English / German / Hungarian
    Windows Ver: 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000 / XP

    Fred,

Have a look at edjpgcom. Very simple and tiny, but I found this some time back and it was useful for (somebody's?) task in VB, since it can be used in commandline mode as well as with interface.

There are quite a few such freebies out there. Irfan View (at least the more recent versions) allow you to do this too.

    Hi Alan,

    Thks for the lead.

FYI: looks like the link to edjpgcom changed to
    http://home.cfl.rr.com/maderik/edjpgcom/index.html

    Even the page
    http://home.cfl.rr.com/maderik
has a note asking if you're looking for the program edjpgcom.

However, this only edits the comment field of jpg files. Is there anything more complete?

I checked my copy of IrfanView, which is V3.9 and downloaded about 3-4 months ago. I don't see anything on the menus that looks like it does the tags. I also checked its help and saw nothing. I did see a few things in the Save As dialog that suggested one might be able to change the Comment, IPTC, and EXIF info (whatever those last 2 are). I'm not sure that's all there is for jpegs. It certainly didn't seem to be on the same level as the mp3tag editor you referenced earlier in the thread.

Another <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> alternative to those mentioned in this post: TagScanner.
The version I've used is 4.7, but the latest release is 4.8.

The <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> MP3ext adds a shell extension so you can right click on an MP3 and have a property page to change the tags.

    Re: On MP3's tags....

I appreciate everybody's input on this subject. Now...the question that still remains is...can someone suggest or is aware of an approach to get these tags (edited and saved) through automation via VB/VBA or any other COM+ compliant package?. The basic idea is to get this functionality transparent to the user (or without the proprietary interface of the suggested programs). I am not fully aware of the nature nor structure of an mp3 ( as opposed as a....say ..MS Word file....that exposes std and custom properties to anybody that can load an easy to deal dll....). But I still think it should be possible. Thanks again.

If you really want to dig in at that level, this specification, especially the section MPEG Audio Tag ID3v1 should contain all the info you need to hack one apart.

A cursory look at the posts in <!post=this thread,264974>this thread<!/post>, especially <!profile=Andrew Cronnolly>Andrew Cronnolly<!/profile>'s, implies that MP3 tag info is readily available to VB and VBA.
