    Hi Rob:
    There shouldn't be any gap. I'm not sure what you mean by allocating characters for a field. You don't need to allocate space any characters. What are you doing? If you want e.g.
    FirstName LastName
    all you need to do, is:
    In your main document, insert the 2 fields

    If you insert the fields using the Mail Merge toolbar, they should automatically adjust in size. There also are all sorts of magic tricks you can use to deal with additional or missing information, such as job titles, company names, middle initials, and so forth. We've had some great threads on those things, but I hope you can at least get over this first hurdle by re-inserting your merge fields.
