drop down list (excel 2000)

Two years ago I built a spread sheet that uses drop down lists for someone to select up to 5 options for a cell. It seemed fairly simple at the time, but I can't for the life of me figure out how I did it.
Is there a good explanation somewhere about how to do this that some one could point me to - or give me an example? I am fairly certain that I did not have to go into Visual Basic to do it.
As an adjunct question - is there a way I can select the cell in question and see how it was done? No matter what I do to select the cell - I just get the list with the little Arrow box adjacent and the little finger for selection.
I am running Excel 2000 on Win 2000 with both being current as far as I know.

You probably used Data Validation. Search this Forum for many excellent explanations and discussions on DV, and how to overcome some of its apparent limits.

You probably used the Data Validation facility.

If you select the existing cell, and then from the Data Menu select Validation you will see how it was set up.
