watched vs. favorites

I'm slightly confused on the difference between watched and favorite threads. I've read the help but it didn't do much to unconfuse me.

They seem similar to me in that I want to keep a list of threads that contain really useful topics that I don't want to have to search for later (and hope I know what keywords to use as sometimes it's hard to find). Which of the two choices would be more appropriate for this type of use?

    Thnx,
    Deb

I'm more confused than you: how do you designate a favorite thread? Here's what I see:

    (1) Board level: Favorite Forums

    (2) Thread level: Watched Threads

    (3) Individual post level: Post Reminders

It is a bit odd having different terminology in each case, but ... I can live with it.

...to keep a list of threads that contain really useful topics...

I think I'm in-line with what Jefferson said when I point out that your description seems to point to what are called Post Reminders - on the lower LEFT of your Control Panel. This is for threads, as you said, that you want to quickly refer to in the future, even though you may not have posted anything in the thread. In my view, it's kinda like your own personalized star post list. Might this be what you meant when you said favorite threads?

On the other hand, Watched Threads (I believe) is intended as a mechanism for you to be made aware of new postings to threads in which YOU have participated. The Watched Threads list is flagged every time something new is posted in that thread, regardless of whether it's in response to YOUR post or not.

The Lounge also has email notifications and daily digests, both of which I choose NOT to participate in, simply because I'm here every day and check all the forums I visit, so I don't need the deluge of email to remind me to check Lounge activity. For many Loungers, one or both of these features is USEFUL from a historical perspective, so I'm not putting it down - or at least I don't mean to be. Does any of this help?

Yes that's what I need.... the 'post reminders' as you defined them would work for my need to keep a list of posts that I'd like to quickly access since they contain info I think I'll need later (and not want to search for). Many of the ones I'be tagged as watched/favorite aren't ones I've contributed to.

Ok so now I need to somehow move my watched/favorites to 'post reminders' eh? Or doesn't it matter?

    Thanks for un me.

    Re: watched vs. favorites

'favorite' comes up after you designate a thread to be 'watched'. In the text of the acknoweldgement screen, it says something about favorites as if it's another category.

You're right that there is no 'make favorite' button like there is a 'watch' button.

It shows up in each Forum index...

But that's for the whole forum, Leif, and the question here is about specific posts. To Deb - why don't you go in to your profile and set the option to have all posts you enter into added to the Watched Threads list. You can do, if you like, as I do and delete some from the list periodically.

Technically, there's no way to do that in one go because one lists threads and one is for individual posts. It seems easier to keep them under threads for now and, when you visit them and find the post you really care about, set up the post reminder and then delete the watched thread at that time.
