    Insert Page Numbers (2002)

How can I make inserted page numbers default to Centered? Fixing normal.dot doesn't seem to work.

    Re: Insert Page Numbers (2002)

    Hi Lou:
It depends where you're trying to insert them. If you're using the header/footer, those have two tab stops in them...center & right. Therefore, you need to press the tab once & then insert your page number.

If you're inserting them in the main document, it will take on the formatting of the paragraph style that contains the insertion point. You can either create a style that has center justification (e.g. name it Page) or create an AutoText entry that contains the page field with center justification. In the latter case, you'll need to include the paragraph mark.

If you need more information, tell me exactly what you're doing to insert the page field.
    Hope this helps,

When you use Insert>Page Numbers... you end up inserting a floating TextBox. As far as I know, there is no place to set the default for the settings in this dialog.

The process Phil describes can be conveniently done using the Header and Footer toolbar. The # button inserts a field code ( { PAGE } ) that actually sits in the line of text after the first tab. You can view it as a code or as the resulting number (use Alt+F9 to switch back and forth). These are a little bit less trouble in the long run than those floating TextBoxes. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I'm talking about Insert>Page Numbers. I've got a macro set up to insert a footer that I like, but occasionally I just want to put page numbers down there. I HATE that little floating text box, but I guess I'll have to learn to live with it.

No, you don't have to live with it. I never use it. Just make an autotext entry for a centered page field like I suggested.
    - press Ctrl+E
    - press Ctrl+F9
    - type <font color=red>page</font color=red>
    - press F9
    - select the field & the paragraph mark
    - press Alt+F3
    - give it a name (e.g. pg)

Now every time you want it, just type pg & press F3. A lot easier than using a menu to insert a page number you don't like.

Sorry my post wasn't clear. The method described in my second paragraph does not give you a floating TextBox. Give it a shot.
