Explorer - Can't Change RL Shortcut Icons (XP SP2

Something has changed and I can't work our what , although no doubt I did something that caused it

Anyway, now I need a fix

I have numerous URL shortcuts in a Toolbar (in an Explorer folder) all of which are showing the unimaginative blue Explorer. They used to show customised icons that I have stored on my had disk. When I right click on the shortcut, select properties, change icon, the correct icon is displayed. I click OK and the icon on the "Web Document" tab changes to the desired icon, but when I click "Apply" or "OK" again nothing changes

I search high and low on the web, Microsoft KB, numerous XP help and tweaking sites but without any joy. Seems I've hit a

The problem applies to all URL file shortcuts that I have in Explorer, except in the Favourites Folder where I can pick up the Favicon from the URL web site. Strangely , I can change the icon in the Quick Launch area on the Taskbar but it reverts the the blue "E" after a reboot or resume after hibernating, but I cannot change the icon in the Quick lAunch Explorer Folder.

I'm sure there is some Lounger out there with the fix.

You need to flush IconCache. The best way to do it is to use TweakUI Powertoy (you can download it from here ).

Open TweakUI, on the left pane click Repair, on the right pane click on "Rebuild Icons" button.

I've tried TweakUI "Rebuild Icons" but that unfortunately does not make any difference whatever

I suspect something has inadvertently been changed in Registry, but I have no idea what. Anyone got any clues where to look?

Try AM-Deadlink. It is and easy to use.

I'm afraid AM-Deadlink (or PC Mag's FavIcon) doesn't solve my problem.

The URL link from the shortcut works just fine.

The problem is only with the showing of an icon I select from my hard disk in Windows Explorer and in Quick Launch on the Taskbar, not in Internet Explorer's favourites.

Any more ideas?

It's not (except to try), but Microangelo may resolve this issue for you. It allows you to change the icons for almost everything and I believe the changes stick, even after the trial period expires. This , of course, doesn't address your problem or what is actually causing it, but is a possible temporary "work-around" for this situation. I believe that you are correct that some value in the registry has become corrupt or changed but have no idea what or where..

Thanks for the suggestion, Microangel looks lkike a great icon utility (although I'd say overpriced), but it hasn't solved my problem either. But it did remind me of another one. In Microangelo Explorer (and quite a few other applications) I only see the following Folders:

Desktop
-- My Network Places
| + Entire Network
| + My Web Sites on MSN
|------ Unused Desktop Shortcuts

And that is it No access to any other Folders on my hard disk

Maybe this problem is related to the icon changing problem

To make my problem clear I've attached a graphic of the steps taken to try and change the icon of a URL shortcut in Windows Explorer and the results.

Still looking for a solution, but for now it's

Just a shot in the dark here.... but, if you disable your network connection, does that give you back My Documents and My Computer in the Explorer view ??

Interesting thought, but unfortunately disabling my network connection (and rebooting) does not solve the problem. I've also tried disabling ZoneAlarm and AVG Antivirus and rebooting but that doesn't make any difference either.

The restricted Folder listing also occurs in "Notepad" and "WordPad" , although WordPad also displays "My Recent Documents" but that's it - this happens in both the "Open" and "Save As" dialogues. All MS Office products show all Folders.Windows Explorer shows all Folders when opened from a shortcut with a command line parameter for a drive or folder or file, but without the command line parameter Explorer opens with the restricted Folder list including "My Documents" (not "My Recent Documents") .

I suspect this Folder display problem is related to the URL shortcut Icon changing problem, but with no real understanding of how that could be, and I still have not found the solution to either.

Any more ideas?

Have you tried System Restore to get back to a point before the problem(s) began ?? It might help, and shouldn't cause any other problems. I also came across this page that might give you some direction or an idea about what the problem might be related to. You said the My Documents and My Computer folders were missing from Windows Explorer. What happens when you click on the My Computer icon on your desktop ?? How about My Documents on the Start menu ???

Well done Doc Watson ,

You have given me the clue to solving one of my problems .

I didn't have My Computer on my Desktop - I like clean desktop in both the real and virtual worlds.

Your clue to check My Computer on my Desktop lead me to re-instating it as a Desktop Icon and, lo and behold , all my Folders were again visible in all browse dialogues, including in Microangelo, NotePad, WordPad, EditStudio and quite few other applications that had suffered from the limited Folder list.

Now I still have to solve the problem with changing icons on URL shortcuts - Microangelo doesn't have that function unfortunately .

Trevor,

Glad my suggestion helped. Sometimes, just lining up the ducks and knocking them down one at a time is all it takes. I'll see if I can find a solution to your icon problem.
