    keep With next - characters (Word97SR2)

    Has anyone a technique for eliminating word-wrap on ANY character string?

    The attached document, on my system, endures word-wrap after the {eq} field for the second instance of "'PROGRAMMING"; <font color=red>"PROG</font color=red>" appears at the right-hand end of one line and "<font color=red>RAMMING"</font color=red> appears at the left-hand end of the next line. (If it doesn't for you, it will if you insert or delete a few characters)

    I'd like the equivalent of "keep with next" or "keep together" to be applied to a string of characters, rather than to a paragraph.

    It's a more general case of the hard-space and hard-dash situation.

    Well, if I insert your parenthetical inside a { QUOTE "stuff goes here" } field, it sticks together, but it doesn't display the results of the EQ field. Not so useful. Hmmm.

    Nonetheless, you get a chocolate star for trying.

    Just out of interest, I'm in 97SR2, but what were you in?

    I'm grateful for any confirmation that it's not me when these weird things crop up.

    .... and speaking of weird things cropping up (grin!)

    Yay Beryl! (Beryl: (n) Gem of the Lounge) That works, so you not only confirm that the problem is general but have a solution as well.

    Now I have two more questions for you:
    1) How did you hit on the EQ field as a solution and
    (2) What version are you in?

    Now, why are you getting TWO gold stars instead of one? It seems to me that this is a wonderfully general solution to the problem of split-strings, of which the most common example is, perhaps, a part number like "9 j h g 7 g 5 j 7 l ll" that can get split over a line boundary, and had me writing two routines "replace digit space letter with a hard space" and "replace letter space digit with a hard space" etc.

    I'm considering a shortcut key macro that applies the {EQ}, either across selected ("problem") text, or that trawls a document looking for problems.

    Thank you, kind sir!

    (1) I was just fiddling around, trying different things with putting them in fields generally, and used the eq field because it was the one you used to create your strange character in the first place!

    (2) 97SR2 at work - XP at home - I'm at work at the moment ...

    When do I get to eat the chocolate stars? (me like chocolate <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> ...)

    Beryl, thanks for the answers. I'd love to hear what happens with my sample doc under XP, and if your solution still applies.

    They weren't there? That's Odd. I wrapped them inan "Equal" wrapper. (heh heh!)

    I'll try your doc tonight when I get home. If I ever get home. I've just found that Word has thrown away all the work I've done on my new template set since ~12:15 today ... and it was fiddly "change a bit here, change a bit there" stuff, so replicating it is going to be hell.

    Re: keep With next - characters (Word97SR2)

    Numbers are cheap. I use a "VBE" and a "VBEUp" to open and re-open my applications. During the course of a single day, I might see a template percolate from Under251.dot to Under378.dot.

    Each run of VBEUp provides me with a fall-back to earlier versions from which I can recover.

    The telephone is ringing? VBEUp!
    Lunchtime? VBEUp!
    etc.

    Sounds good... and extremely desirable ... but I don't understand your code?

    - How do you run it? From a toolbar button, or just Run > Macro, or what?
    - Where, or at what point, do you run it?
    - It seems to *open* docs/dots with a different number, rather than *save* them as such? Do you close the doc/dot each time the phone rings?!
    - It talks about a 'user' navigating about and taking the name from a dialog box ?!?!?!?!

    Re: keep With next - characters (Word97SR2)

    Ooops! I just noticed that I hadn't included the Utilty library code. I'll re-post later today with a standalone version.

    I maintain two icons on my MSWord toolbar "VBE" and "VBEUp".

    I click on VBAUp and navigate/browse to a template such as 'Under251.dot"; the macro opens that file, saves it as Under252.dot, then opens the VBE and maximizes the VBE window. Thus at 9am this morning I've taken the Under251 from yesterday evening and started work on a renamed copy.

    At 10:30am after I've made a slew of changes, I'll save it and re-open it (without closing) and VBEUp will raise the number to Under253.dot - and I just plod away working on the code. The 'Phone rings - I can VBEUp and see Under253 raised to Under254. Ho-hum. It's made a save in the process.

    I developed this for VBA work, but now find that I use it for regular Word documents, too, such as versions of Proposal001.doc, Proposal002.doc, Proposal003.doc, etc. When the proposal is complete, I rename proposal213.DOC (!!!!) to be Proposal.DOC, and delete the interim versions.

    Although I'm having second thoughts about the wisdom of deleting files (mycomputerisrunningslow.htm)

    Hi Beryl:
    I can't get it to display. Is this the field syntax that you're using? I'm using Word 2000.

    { { quote "{ eq { eq o(O,|,G)} }" } }

    Re: keep With next - characters (Word97SR2)

    No, you're going too far - you want:

    "{ eq { PRO { eq o(O,|,G)} RAMMIN{ eq o(O,|,G)} } }"

    The quotes at each end above are the ones that show at each end of the word, "PROGRAMMING" when F9'd. If you follow what I said in the earlier post exactly as I said it that should be what you end up with, 'cos that's what I did!

    Re: keep With next - characters (Word97SR2)

    Oops, sorry, you've got me at it now! One too many sets of brackets, should be:

    "{ eq PRO{ eq o(O,|,G)}RAMMIN{ eq o(O,|,G)} }"

    Apologies!

    Re: keep With next - characters (Word97SR2)

    OK. Try this code. (maybe paste it into your Normal.DOT for now).

    Create a template MyTemp035.dot. save and close it. Then run the VBEUp and browse to your saved template MyTemp035.dot. You should see it open as MyTemp035.dot and then be saved as MyTemp036.dot. Ta, as we say in the trade, da!

    VBE just opens a template WITHOUT increasing the version number. I most commonly use this when i just want to jump to VBE with a maximized window - i run the macro and tap the ESCape key on the Open dialogue box.

    Thanks, Beryl. I was looking at Jefferson's post when you said select everything inside the quotes. That's what happens when you view the Lounge in flat mode. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Now I get it to work. Even so, it's different than what you just posted. I get:

    { eq PRO{ eq o(O,|,G)}RAMMIN{ eq o(O,|,G)} }

    rather than

    { eq { PRO{ eq o(O,|,G)}RAMMIN{ eq o(O,|,G)} } }
