Just so we are on the same page - you want to buy a new internal DVD-RW SCSI and mount it in an old external CD-RW case? Is that right? And you want to know if that is economically feasible? Is that just to maintain a nostalgic look - or maybe a slightly self-serving justification to the better half for pack-ratting old HW?

Do you need a SCSI drive?

I think you would be better off buying a new IDE DVD-RW drive - most of which will also write to CD - and replace your existing CD-RW drive. In this way, you will still have the capability to record both, you don't have to worry about connections, power requirements, or bay space, and you get to add another piece of old HW to your collection!

Steve,
Unless you are trying to give yourself a challenge to do this, I would send this old hardware to the Smithsonian Institute or some other archive. Go get a new drive if you do need one.
I know how you might feel about this since I am a "pack rat" myself but there does come a day when.......

Yes, you're both right: it's a daft idea. Looking around, irrespecvtive of practicality and feasability, I haven't been able to find a SCSI DVD writer for less than about GBP175, which makes it a very expensive proposition. Especially when the A-lust unit in this month's PC-Pro is an NEC writer costing around GBP40.

I'll just have to swallow my disappointment and pitch it. Thanks for talking me down.
