Do you get a message at the bottom right of your screen saying something like "Found new hardware" when you connect the USB cable to the USB socket/port on your PC (assuming you've already connected it at the printer end, and powered the printer on!)?

If not, try connecting to a different USB port on the PC.

If still not, see if you can try another USB cable with the same connector at the printer end.

The found new hardware appears during installation - all but briefly. Have tried another USB cable no difference. This model printer has no power on button - if it is connected it is on! In trying to resolve problem - the printer is USB only but for sum strange reason will not find USB only lpt. Where to from here?

My next excursion would be into the dark depths of Device Management, found from (for example):
Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> System Tools -> Device Management -> Universal Serial Bus controllers
and have a ferret* through each of these entries to check that the Device Status says that "This device is working properly" (or not!).

*PS Word changed because you Aussies only laugh if I had left it as "have a root through each of these entries"...

A pommie with a sense of humor - what a rarity ! Must be something to do with our out of season cricket team results or your Mr. Posh helping out some spaniards! Either way thanks for the info - I will report back as time permits.

    John,
Just a quick note. Love your new user pic. Even better in colour.

    Re: canon s200spx

The problem appears to be that under device manager in control panel the USB controllers is suppose to have S200spx listed. Unfortunately this is not listed and apparently until it is the printer is non functional.

If I understand what you said earlier correctly, you have installed some Canon-printer-specific software on your PC.

Have you tried uninstalling it, and seeing if the printer is now recognised?
Have you tried Canon's website/technical support persons?
How about the shop you got it from? (ok, it was just an idea...!)
