On both our pc's today the Ms update, Msn and barclays bank sites have not been loading. Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

I can only speak for MS Update which loaded fine earlier in the day. Just tried again and it worked OK. I don't usually use MSN. ( or Barclay Bank )
Were both PCs on the same ISP?

Yes, both pc's share a LAN connection. Having just installed XpSp2 on them I am led to believe that (both) IE6 settings have been changed. I've had a look at the settings and can't put my finger on the one that allows me to "unblock" msn or microsoft.com. In a similar vein, the autoupdating isn't workink either! Any ideas please?

I don't know why SP2 would change settings, but you could check IE options>security and see if the Internet settings are at least on "medium" and that for some reason "something" has put them ( MSN, Barclays and MSupdate ) in the restricted zone. I have microsoft.com in my "trusted zone" along with wopr.com.
You should also run AdAware & Spybot to check for some malware that's blocking them.

Re: Slow sites (wXpHe Sp2 O2003)

Hi and thanks for the advice. Checked out the settings, re-booted Pc's and "lo and behold" all 'tis Ok now on this item.
However, when I went to run Search I got / get the error message "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run Setup"
Interestingly, I put my original Xp cd in, clicked on the install button and got the message that my version of windows is more current than the cd! In Contol Panel - Add remove programmes - add remove windows components: I couldn't find the section that includes Search Assistant.
Seems to me that I'm missing something - but what and from where?

Re: Slow sites (wXpHe Sp2 O2003)

    Stephen,
Since you installed SP2, you would naturally have a newer version of XP the the original CD. You can "slipstream" or combine the original XP and SP2 on to one CD, so that you have an up to date source CD. I posted a thread on slipstreaming in the XP forum but I don't have it right at hand. I will search it out and come back to you on that.

To reinstall the search assistant :

NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure.

Click Start , click Run , and then type the following command:
    %systemroot%inf

NOTE : There are no spaces at all in the preceding command line.

Click OK to open the INF folder.
    Locate the file Srchasst.inf .
Right-click the file, and then click Install . This will reinstall the files that Search needs to proceed normally.

You will be asked to place your windows XP cd rom in the drive.

    Try this out. Should work.

Tried that, and had to get the file from my original WXp Cd; still doesn't solve the error problem though. I'll have a look at your other post before I tear the remainder of my hair out!
