USB 2 nag screens (XP Home SP 1)

On an older computer, inserting a USB 2 device triggers a slew of messages that it could be faster if I had the right hardware. Is there such hardware that I can affordably install in the computer, if only to get rid of the messages? Alternatively, can I get rid of the messages, knowing as I do that it's going to run more slowly?

You don't say if you have upgraded your system for USB 2, but I'm assuming that you have not. I found this bit of information.........
[i]"it's fairly easy to install a USB2 upgrade card that will give your PC two or more high-speed USB2 ports. Companies such as Belkin and Adaptec sell these upgrade cards for about

Re: USB 2 nag screens (XP Home SP 1)

The computer is a Dell Dimension 8200 with four USB slots. I have both a USB keyboard and mouse, and the keyboard has two slots of its own, leaving me with a net of four. I suspect that it may have been manufactured shortly before USB 2 became standard. It was ME and I upgraded to XP Home.

I'm in no hurry for a change because I seldom use peripherals where I care about speed - printer and scanner are slow anyway, I have a DVD burner and I don't know how much difference it would make there, flash memory units are getting bigger all the time and I see the difference in speed there, but none of this is used often enough to justify a major expenditure. It is something I'm trying to learn a little about and keep an eye on prices 'for the next time I have the case open'.

This brings us back to the remarkable cascade of messages that appears on the screen when I plug a USB 2 device into it - Microsoft really went overboard on that.

Thank you for the help and the leads.

    Hi Peter

If you shop around you will find that USB 2.0 PCI cards are getting quite cheap with many around 20 US dollars. A froogle search (only lists American sites) shows the range of cards available.

    Peter,

Your profile shows that you are located in Toronto, Ontario (regardless that your country setting shows Finland <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>).

I bought a 4 port Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card from Bestbytes in Whitby for about $50.00. There are also other products from Adaptec, Lava, D-Link ranging in price from $29.95 to $54.95 for 2, 3 or 4 port units.

If you don't live near Whitby, try Future Shop or Best Buy. They would have similar products in the same price range.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob
