When I send a Word attachment to my cousin it comes up in Wordpad. She uses MS Works.

    How can she change this?

If she has a older version of Works, it did nOT include Word, or her system is set to use Wordpad for "doc" type of files.
What version of Works is she using?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Just an addendum to Dave's post...

Have her save the attachment to her desktop (easily done with a right click/save as) and then hold the shift key while right-clicking on the saved attachment. This will force an Open with... to appear on the context menu that appears, and when that options is chosen she can select her editor of choice. She will need to tick the box reading Always use this program to open this kind of file at the bottom of the box if she wants it to be permanent.
