    SP2 Source (WIN XP PRo)

I'm now considering installing the SP2 Upgrade baving received the CD from MS

However I'm wondering, now that WIN XP SP2 has been out in the jungle for a few weeks now and a couple of bugs have already been found, if it would be better to not use the CD version but to download the full SP2 Upgrade from the MS website ??

Would the website version of SP2 have any upgrades of its own already incorporated, our is the CD version still the only version we have to take our chances with ?

Could someone satisfy my curiosity and caution ?

Awaiting some thoughts from a higher plane

    Meanwhile

    Max,
The CD version should be the same as the online update. I don't think there have been hotfixes out since SP2 came out.
    Go for it. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

There has been one hotfix already - the GDI buffer overrun thing with JPG images, but it does not affect Service Pack 2. I'd get that patch or SP2 pronto!

I presume that before I install the GDI patch I must install the SP2 update ?

    Right ?

The GDI security issue is detailed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028 and it lists Windows XP SP2 as being non-affected. I recommend installing SP2 straight away. You can install the GDI patch before installing SP2 but as SP2 is not affected you might as well install SP2 first.

Once you install Windows XP SP2 you can run Windows update to check for any updates/patches that have been released since. As for the GDI security issue you will also need to run Office update to patch Office programs. Also check the security bulletin to see if you have any of the affected programs listed in it and install those patches.

    Thanks Tony

I've taken the plunge and installed SP2 and the Net/GDI patches but I have one program that won't run now #$%^&*(

It gives me an error message saying -

"The WIN 16 sub-system has insufficient resources to continue running
Click on OK , close your applications & restart your machine"

    That doesn't work @#$%^&*

    Any thoughts ?

    AND,

    What is the WIN 16 Sub-system ?

When is this message popping up?

I find nothing at MS for XP but several for NT.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
