Forced folder-choice on opening? (WinXP/OXP)

Does anyone know if it's possible to force Outlook to open in either the Inbox or 'Outlook Today' (the available choices once in) by adding a switch or something to the command line that sets it going? Or just what the command line would be to open Outlook *without* forcing either?

I use MailWasher Pro, which is set to automatically open Outlook, but when I use this it forces Outlook to open in the Inbox, whereas I have it set to open in 'Outlook Today'. I've spoken to the MailWasher people, who've pointed out you can specify a command line to open your email client rather than just accepting MailWasher's defaults, but the Outlook shortcut doesn't give it's command line, just says 'Microsoft Outlook', greyed out, in the target box.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming Outlook 2002 is installed in the default location, you can create a new shortcut with target

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Outlook.exe" /select "outlook:foldername"

where foldername is the name of the folder you want to open. For example:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Outlook.exe" /select "outlookutlook today"
or
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Outlook.exe" /select "outlook:inbox"

Thanks, Hans - you were sorely missed, you know!

I'll try that this evening (it's on my home machine).

Quick follow-up, Hans - your command line worked perfectly, thanks, but do you by any chance happen to know if there is a nice handy switch available to make the command line check if Outlook is already open and if so restore that window, only opening a new copy if not?

The reason I ask is Mailwasher behaves like that using its default settings, but with the new command line a new window is opened every time it's clicked! Since the way I use Mailwasher is to go check it every so often and click on the button to go through to Outlook when there is something there to download, while leaving Outlook open all the time in the background, at the moment I'm not sure which is worse - the wrong folder every time, or dozens of copies!

Here's hoping you can produce the answer by magic again!

Wow! After that last post, I decided to try to get into your good books ( ) by 'helping myself', and did some googling - and I found this fantastic site called Outlook tips.

The specific page I found gives a complete list of dozens of switches that can be used - it seems brilliant to me!

Do we have a list of recommended resources, because if we do I really think this should be added to it!!

I hope you found something on the Outlooks Tip site you mention in your next reply, for I don't know the answer to this one.

I did indeed! The switch 'recycle' will do exactly as I wanted - and without affecting the currently selected folder, too! Hey, am I on a roll today, or what?!

It also says that apparently in most cases you can shortcut the command line down to just one word (plus switch(es)), so you don't usually even have to use the full path, as follows:

Outlook /recycle

Having said that, I just tried that from both the command prompt and in a newly created shortcut and it didn't work in either one, so when the "usual" occasions are, I don't know!

The only times I've managed to get that to work is from the command line inside Outlook itself - not from the Windows command line.

Sounds about right, judging by my experience so far!

For 2003 the MS Web-based help is handy: Switches, it's where I go for my research on switches for this Forum. Which reminds me that there's a VBA project that I want to tackle using the

/f msgfilename

switch. Where does the time go?
