    RE: Internet access abroad

Not sure if this is the right place to start the thread. I'm thinking of taking my portable computer abroad and would like use it to access the internet - Yahoo account mainly via Internet Explorer. Is it possible to arrange for an ISP provider in the Uk to facilitate this, enabling me to connect from a phone line abroad? Or, is it best to take out an avccount with a local ISP provider? Thanks.

How long you are going for may be the defining factor. I would say the most convenient (short-term) answer would be either wifi - see Free Wifi across Europe - or using something like our ISP's Global Roaming

Leif, many thanks for the suggestion. Can I buy a standalone WiFi card for the portable and is it easy to instal/? Also, I will still need an ISP provider abroad, will I not, or do i dial into my IPS provider using an international number?

    Re: RE: Internet access abroad

I've never personally attempted free (or paid for!) public Wifi before, so I'm not going to be a lot of use, but I would expect you just log in as if you were on a network. Check the Wifi link above - there are some How-To guides on the right side of the page, but they are fraught with adverts.....

As for the wifi card, that is probably a better question to put in the Hardware forum, but I would wait until you get some other responses and/or clarification here first.
Depending on your portable, I would imagine it is just a plug-in card such as the MA521 I use at home. (An absolute doddle to install.)

Public WiFi is usually fairly simple to set up. You typically allow it to connect and then try to use your web browser. If it is a free hotspot then it may well just work, otherwise your web surfing will be interrupted by a proxy server that prompts you for your credit card details to continue.

It might be easier to ask your local ISP if they have a peering arrangement for dial up access with a UK ISP, or try something like http://adial.co.uk/ for free UK dialup access. I cannot vouch for this service, just found it on a quick google search for uk isp dialup free, but I do use the sponsor (UK2.NET) for hosting a web site and they seem OK.

I do NOT know about the UK, but here in the States, many hotels provide access. Some with WiFi and others with Cat5 cable. Some libraries proved FREE access by WiFi and Cat5.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

In the UK there are some, expensive, hotels with CAT5 access; even fewer have WiFi.

Seems to me that if Farmer would say where "abroad" is, you guys could advise him a lot better about what might be available. Is Hong Kong or Phuket abroad? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
