Reading a Microsoft Works document (office 2003)

Is there a workaround to opening a "works" document in Word 2003

If you select File | Open... in Word, there is a "Files of type" dropdown list near the bottom of the dialog. This dropdown list should contain options for opening Works word processing files (*.wps) from several versions. Can you open the document using one of these, or was it created in another version of Works?
