    +if ? (Excell/All)

I have inherited a workbook from a colleague (now left, otherwise I would have asked him).

This is not a question of what this function means, more why has he put a + sign in front of this if statement and the cell reference H21:

    =+IF(H21=" ","",VLOOKUP(+H21,CostTAB,2))

What is its use, I have never come across this?

In Lotus 1-2-3 you start formulas with a plus sign. Excel allows users to do this to make it easier for 1-2-3 users to migrate to Excel.

    Re: +if ? (Excell/All)

You can delete it! Versions of Lotus 1-2-3 used the + sign to start off expressions. The die-hards of this suite used to start expressions with + where in Excel it is proper to start with =. Removing the + with in essence correwct the formula to excel standards.

That explains it, the guy I got it off is/was one of those "die hards" <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>
