Mail Merge Issue? (Word 2002 >)

    Quick question!
In 2002 and up, the task pane takes care of the merging process. I find it great, and it guides one clearly through the merging, but one issue surfaces that I need cleared!
The "MORE ITEMS" link (in the task pane) activates a dialog box allowing you to insert the merge fields into the form letter. The problem is that I cannot move the cursor to the various positions in the letter to insert a field there. I need to open and close the dialog several times to place the fields in locations in the letter. I recall in the older versions that this was not the case.
Am I missing a easier way to insert the fields???....Why is this so, seems to be a step backwards from the 2000 version!
    Regards,
    Rudi

    Select Tools | Customize...
If the Mail Merge toolbar isn't displayed yet, tick it in the Toolbars tab.
    Switch to the Commands tab.
Select 'Mail Merge' in the list of Categories.
Select 'Insert Merge Field' in the list of Commands, and drag it to the Mail Merge toolbar.
Drop it in a convenient location, for example to the left of 'Word Commands'.
    Click OK.
Now you can place the insertion point, select a merge field from the dropdown, etc., as in Word 2000 and before.

    Great! Thanx!
I'm just SOOO tempted to ask this....
Why did I have to do this (MANUALLY), when this is such an important function in mail merge! That the button isn't there on the toolbar by default, and that the dialog version does not allow for this flexibility! What came over Microsoft when they upgraded in 2002> <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

If I knew the answer to that, I'd probably be a Microsoft employee instead of a Lounger...

    Hi Hans,

and thank you from me also. I hated what MS did on this particular issue with Office XP.

The Mail Merge toolbar available thru the View menu or right-clicking a menu bar has the Insert Merge Field command.

There are two Insert Merge Field toolbar buttons. The one that is available on the Mail Merge toolbar by default in Word 2002 pops up the modal dialog box Rudi was complaining about in the first post in this thread. The other one is a dropdown list as in Word 2000 and before; that one is not on the Mail Merge toolbar by default, but you can put it there.
