    Importing .dat files

How can I get Access 2000 to import text files with a .dat extension? I never had this problem with Acc97, but with A2K it's a major issue.

    Try this experiment:
    1. Create a text file named 123.txt. Include in that file the following string:1,2,3
    2. Create a new db named 123.mdb.
    3. File | Get External Data | Import | 123.txt. Hit finish. You will see a table named 123.
    4. Delete your table.
    5. Rename 123.txt as 123.dat.
    6. File | Get External Data | Import | 123.dat. Hit Finish. You will get the following message:
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

I'd like to confirm that this is a universal issue--there's no info in the KB about it. Could somebody please try to reproduce it? And if anyone knows of a workaround, I'd *love* to hear about it.
