Hyperlinks (Excel 2003)

I have Excel documents with links to elsewhere in the document, to other Excel documents and to Word documents. These have all worked fine in the past but now they only work for the links to other Excel documents if the linked document is open. I cannot get the links to Word documents to work at all. I get an error message that says "Excel cannot open specified file". Has anyone had this problem before? I have checked with several people and no one can explain why or how to fix it. My hyperlinks to elsewhere in the document work fine.

Have either the workbooks with the hyperlinks, or the external files the links refer to, been moved to another location?

No files have been moved. This has occurred since the last Windows update was installed.

I can't find anything conclusive about this. Do newly created hyperlinks to external files work?

New links do not work either, unless the linked document is open.

Sorry, no idea. I don't have Office 2003 myself; perhaps someone who has can help.

What security settings do you have on your computer? It's been a while since I used Hyperlinks inside Excel. In Excel 2003, I now get warning messages hyperlinking to either Word documents or to other Excel workbooks. (I do have WinXP SP2.) HTH

That's my problem. I suspect it is a security setting that was changed with the SP2 but I have been unable to determine where the problem lies.

Try seeing how your Local Intranet is configured in Internet|Options|Security. You may have your hyperlinks fall within the Internet policies instead. For all I know, there may be very good reasons why you are protecting yourself from other local users.

Though I don't know that much about the security settings, I looked through them all and did not see anything that I would suspect. Man this is frustrating! We use linking all the time and it is a very important part of our documents. Can't do our jobs efficiently without them.

Having tested raising various other settings on my own set-up, I cannot see anything immediate.

How long ago did this problem start happening?
Have you had any recent patches or upgrades installed - to your mahcine or to the system?
Do you use a Document Management System for your files?
Do any of your colleagues use Excel hyperlinks? If not, is there any way you can see if you have the same problem when logged on to another workstation?[/list]HTH

    Re: Hyperlinks (Excel 2003)

Just noticed it yesterday but had probably not utilized links for a couple of weeks.
    Recently installed SP2
Our files are all on Novel Client for Windows
We have 8 workstations, all with the same problem.
We have discovered that the problem only occurs when linking documents on our Novel network. I can link documents on my desktop with no problem. I have contacted our IT department where the Novel resides and they are trying to figure out what the problem is. I appreciate your help. Your questions led me to test the Novel/Desktop connection.

    Re: Hyperlinks (Excel 2003)

Turns out we had to run the Novel patch for SP2 and now the links work appropriately. Thanks to all who pondered this problem and offered advice.
