File Open With - Paint Shop Pro 9

When I try to open a graphic file by right clicking the file and select open with and then Paint Shop Pro 9, the file will NOT open, but PSP will fire up. I will then do a File open and select the file all is well, until I close the program. Once I close the program. I get the MS error reporting pane asking permission to send the error report.
Am I alone with this or are any of you having the same issue?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

I think I've experienced a similar problem. As I recall, there's an issue with the command that is sent to open PSP - not an actual bug with PSP itself. (Although I could be mistaken.)

Check the PSP forums on JASC's site for more info from the hardcore PSP users (and JASC staff): http://forums.jasc.com/default.asp?boardid=PaintShopPro

I suspect Mark is right, and I'd look at Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types and scan down Registered Files Types for the Extension: PSP which should say Registered File Type: Paint Shop Pro 7 Image (yours will read 9, because you're richer than me!). A bit lower down it should say Opens With: Paint Shop Pro 7 (same comment) and you'll possibly have to change it if it isn't.

I do NOT want to changed the association to PSP, I use the "Right click" and select "Open With". I am NOT double clicking with the left button.
I just tried it on a psp file and this is what I get,

You probably have a faulty registry key, I had the same problem and this resolved it.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesApplicationsPaint Shop Pro 9.exeshellOpendddexecApplication

The above key probably shows "Paint Shop Pro" but is should be "Paint Shop Pro 9"

I dunno Dave. I assume by now you've checked Tony's tip, so let us know. You DIDN'T say what type of graphic, so I tried the right-click, open-with on JPG, GIF, PNG and PSP (older) files from previous versions and all was well with all tests. I hope Tony's clue finds it for you.

(Edited by DaveA on 07-Oct-04 14:31. )
I am not one that does editing of the registry. I do not have the foggiest idea where to start on the editing or even looking in the registry.

But I did find that any graphic that is NOT associated to be opened by default by PSP will give me this error. Once I can the association with will work. This is NOT suppose to be this way.

I want the association to be to Office Picture Manager 2003, and I will use the "Open with when I to open and edit a file. This happens with gif, jepgs, pngs and psp (which I did change the default to PSP).

    Edit:
I when in to the registry and found 2 entrys (see below) do I deledte the second one?

You only need to change the top one, the bottom one should show "Paint Shop Pro" and should not be deleted.

If you prefer I have attached a text file that can be renamed to psp.reg and when run will make the change for you.

I was also having problems opening my images by using the "open with" command. Your registery fix worked perfectly!
