    USB flash disk oddity (XP)

Hello, this is really wierd, i dont know if anyone has had this behaviour or would know perhaps why this is happening...

I have a 128Meg Usb2.0 flash drive, i use it at work and at home. Just recently when i plug it in at home - to the USB2.0 port, when it is left in there for a minute or two, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting by itself. Just as if I were unplugging it and plugging it back in. Windows makes the noises and the drive drops in and out - i can watch this in my comupter!

Could this be a conflict with another USB device? Can i locate this?

I have looked in the evnt view and it tells me that the logival disk managment administrator service has been active in the startnig and stopping the drive, but when i turn it off or on it makes no difference!

    <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> It is driving me a little nuts!!
    Thanks,

    pmatz

To me, the most obvious thing would be intermittent connectivity -- but USB plugs and sockets always seem pretty solid. And I suppose they are all fairly clean?

yes, i think they are clean. i have used a usb 1 flash disk in the usb2 port, and that works fine, and used my usb2 in a usb 1 port and thats fine....

hmm. just noticed that the usb1 flash disk is fat32, while the usb2 one is fat. i wonder if that will make a difference. will reformat my usb2 disk and see.
    Thanks,

I would be amazed if the file format had anything to do with it!

How would you fancy, very carefully, trying to take it apart and see if there are any loose/breaking/dodgy wires within? (My theory is still intermittent connectivity!).

Alternatively, perhaps you could try it in one of your very many other PCs (!), or in a friend's?

LOL <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15> I have tried it in other pcs and its fine. its not the flash drive.

When i use a usb 1 flash drive in the problematic port then its fine. But i have triend a different USB 2 flash disk in the port and it also drops in and out.
I think i will have to open up the machine and make sure there is no bad connection on the ports or wires to the motherboard. its the front ports so it could be i guess.

Could it be the USB 2 drivers for the mobo being corrupt?
    Thanks,
