Word 2K templates ???

I have recently upgraded to Word 2000 (SR-1) and have been trying to figure out how it deals with templates (.dot) files. They seem to be scattered around a bit. I can find most of them in "Program Files/Microsoft Office/Templates/1033", except for Normal.dot which is buried in "Documents and Settings/Ron M/Application data/Microsoft/Templates". A couple of puzzles:

1. Why do I have a normal2k.dot template and a normal.dot in the same location? What is the difference?

2. In the folder where I found most of the other templates, I have placed some custom templates that I designed for my business; however when I try to open a new file from within Word, I cannot see them in the template display. If I go to them and click directly on them, then I can get them to open as a new file. It is almost as if Word is keeping an index of the templates that it will display.

Any help, or insight, that anyone can provide for this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1. Someone probably renamed the Work2K generated normal to normal2k.dot and then copied over the work 97 normal.dot.

2. System supplied templates are in "Program Files/Microsoft Office/Templates/1033". You cannot add to them. You templates are in /Ron M/Application data/Microsoft/Templates
Put your new templates there and they will appear under the general tab. If you want them to appear under the 'Memos' tab, simply create the folder: /Ron M/Application data/Microsoft/Templates/Memos and put the templates in there and they will appear with the supplied memo templates under the tab 'Memos' when File/New is clicked.

MS coders must have been on something when the dreamed up that change for templates.

See my post on which is some info on how files and tabs show up under File => New, and Template Basics (addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) for more on templates (user and workgroup), document templates, global templates and Normal.dot. This also includes how the files are organized under File New and the location of template folders which varies not only by version of Word but also by operating system.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Bob and Charles. I think I tend to agree with Bob -- MS folks were on something when they dreamed this scheme up.
