Uncontrollable Font Format in field (2000/SP3)

    I'm stumped again
    <center> <IMG SRC=http://www.magma.ca/~wdwells/Fig2.jpg> </center>
The above figure is a snapshot of a file that contains several tables. Two of the tables are 50 to 55 rows long and 8 columns wide. Each table has a series of 35 criteria that are to be scored by the user
The master plan for this approach, is to have each of the 350 (5x35x2) scoring cells contain a macrobutton which upon activation:
    1. <LI>sets the selected cell shading to black,
<LI>sets font of the text in that cell to black,
<LI>sets the shading of the remaining four cells of that set of five to white, and
<LI>sets font of the text in the remaining four cells of that set of five to white.
The consequence of all this is that the user scores by setting one of the five cells to solid black, the remaining four cells changing to, or remaining solid white.
The problem occurs occasionally when opening the file; The text in the white cells is displayed black, and the text in the black cells is displayed white. No longer is the text invisible; and the system seems to believe that it is set as I want. The problem manifests itself in all fields within a table, but not necessarily both tables. This phenominum is not limited to one file, however all if the files in question have a common ancestry.
I have expanded one column; displayed one of the fields; set text in that field to red; then typed in some text and a CR; and then used Shift+F1 to display the attributes of the text in question.
Can any good soul out there offer any insight into what's going on?
    Regards
    Don

This is confusing to me, since fonts usually do not change unless the document is set to "auto update" from its template. Since you have applied direct formatting, the auto update shouldn't override that, but perhaps it does. Have you tried creating your own styles for these different combinations of attributes? Perhaps that will be more stable than direct formatting.

    Thanks Jefferson
That sounds promising. I'll post a progress report or two.

    Hello Jefferson
Thanks again for your response. The key which you gave me:
    <hr><center>shouldn't override that</center><hr>
started the logical juices flowing. The only thing of which I'm aware that can overide direct formatting is the tracking feature which highlights changes. Mine was set to automatic colour in the event of formatting change. So simple, it was hard.

    Don
