Passwords not retained (Outlook 2003 SP1 on Win XP SP 2)

I just upgraded to Outlook 2003 from Outlook XP. I applied SP1 before trying anything.

Even though I have 'remember passwords' set, Outlook is not doing this. So I have to re-enter my passwords every time I want to check mail.

I have checked with Microsoft, and have tried to perform the fix indicated in KB article 290684, but when I go to delete the key I get an error message that says "error while deleting key".

When I check my mail through control panel - mail, the passwords are absent. And no amount of trying will get them to stay put.

Please help. This is proving to be much more frustrating that I want.

Also of note would be that, when I first installed SP2 for XP, I was getting a warning about firewall not being turned on even though I had selected the "I'll do it myself" check box. Turns out SP2 was losing this setting on a consistant basis. I asked Microsoft tech support, and they had me delete a bunch of registry keys. My machine has not been the same since, but it is slowly working it's way back. And the problem was not resolved, but I will NOT ask microsoft for help in this regard again !

See if the long thread starting at <post#=414332>post 414332</post#> helps. The one who posted it had the same problem.

It sure seemed like that would work. I did as directed in the thread, and verified that the key was indeed gone. I then went into control panel, selected Mail, (noticed that the password was missing) entered the proper password, ensured 'save password' was selected, clicked Next, clicked Finish, and tried it again.

Same problem, and the key is back in the registry.

Outlook 2003 has set something different than Outlook XP did.

I'm sorry it didn't work. According to <!mskb=290684>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 290684<!/mskb>, the fix applies to both Outlook 2002 (XP) and 2003. There are frequent mentions in the newsgroups that it doesn't work in Outlook 2003; sometimes creating an entirely new mail account works, but for others even that doesn't help. There doesn't seem to be a definitive solution at the moment.

I was afraid of that. Darn.

Where can I check from time-to-time to see if a resolution has been found ? MSKB ?

btw, my apologies for taking so long to reply. I don't check e-mail anywhere near as often as I used to. I'm sure you understand <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

You can check the MSKB from time to time, or search the newsgroups to see if a solution appears.
