    Shade Cell if specific text entered (Excel 97)

    I was disappointed when I found if my sheet is protected I could not shade a cell.

    I am excited to have discovered that I can use conditional formatting to do this using the =ISTEXT(A1) to shade the cell if there is any text present .

    I want to be more specific and shade the cell if the letter "P" is entered.

    Can anyone tell me what the formula would be for that?

    Do you want to shade the cell is its value is equal to "P" or if its value contains a "P", for example "Protected" or "South Pole"?

    That's very simple:
    - Select "Cell value is" in the first dropdown in the Conditional Formatting dialog.
    - Select "equal to" in the second dropdown.
    - Enter P in the box next to the second dropdown.
    - Click Format to set the shading.
    - Click OK twice.

    Hi Hans

    This has caught my interest suppose I wanted to Format a range of cells, if the first cell in the range contained the word total.

    For instance if H18 contained Bact. Cabinet Glass Wash 5 Ltr P252460 Total, and I would like to format the row from H18 to T18 what would the formulation be?

    Thanks

    Select H18:T18
    Format cond format
    Formula is:
    <pre>=ISNUMBER(SEARCH("total",$H18))</pre>

    <format>
    [Format as desired]
    <ok><ok>
