New Hard Drive; Many Virus attacks (Home SP2 w/ DSL Connection)

Hello All. A good friend of mine has a two-year old Dell which just had a hard drive replacement. His wife loaded all the anti virus and malaware goodies...e.g. firewall, Norton AV, spybot, adaware & spysweep, but not a hijacking pgm. Since the outset, she's experienced slooow startups & slow connections to Yahoo, MSN & iwon. The DSL provider couldn't help eliminate those problems. She has also experienced, from the first time she connected to cyber space, worm and trojan attacks. Most were picked up by Norton AV and quarantined. Some were identified but not quarantined. I was able to help her find and delete them. However, the next day, they reappeared. We did the same thing but they again returned.

Calls to the DSL provider and Dell's help desk in Manila proved fruitless. The said that only a complete restore might help. That we did, 3 times in the course of a week. But alas, the attacks kept coming after each restore and the slowness problem persisted. New calls to the DSL provider and Dell folks again proved fruitless. They both said the bugs were somewhere deep within the system and that outside help from firms with professional diagnostic equipment would be necessary. The DSL person even opined that it might be time to dump the computer.

QUESTIONS 1a,b & c...is it possible that these bugs are imbedded in the hard drive or some other part? If so, is it a forever thing?? If the hard drive is infected, could it have been embedded in it from the get-go, which to me means it wasn't a NEW item....probably a cannibalized part???

QUESTION 2...Can these problems be eliminated and how?

By 'restore' do you mean 're-install'? If so, were they clean re-installs? - if not, you are likely to have retained any resident trojans.

Plus - check out the two Spyware/Safe Computing threads featured in the Other Star Posts index.

Thanx for the reply Leif. The Complete Restore we did just about deleted all files and programs( that came with the computer and that we added) and then reinstalled the XP Home stuff that was on the CDs.

    Hope this answers your question.

It's critical to use Windows Update and get updated ASAP after re-installing from an old CD. Many attacks exploit old Windows flaws without you doing anything other than connecting to the Internet. If you possibly can set up a firewall before connecting, that would be ideal.

Thanx jscher. Will do that for sure. Right now I'm doing things suggested at Tom Coyote's forum regarding hijack this and trend micro virus cleanup.
