    Firefox 1.0 release date

The release date for Firefox 1.0 is provisionally set for 9th November. Prior to that there will be 2 release candidates with provisional dates of 18th October for RC1 and 25th October for RC2.

Further info can be found on the Firefox 1.0 roadmap

    Re: Firefox 1.0 release date

Firefox 1.0RC1 was released on 27th October. RC2 is now scheduled for early November (no date set) and version 1.0 is still shown as 9th November. Unless you like testing software then I would not install RC1 or RC2.

Surely 1.0 RC1 would just be an incremental improvement on 1.0 PR? e.g. have they fixed the cursor positioning "bug"?!

    Re: Firefox 1.0 release date

With 1.0 RC1 there have been a number of changes which need to be tested. In addition you will find that some extensions that worked in 1.0 PR will be disabled pending an update to ensure compatibility. For example the list of compatible extensions does not include the Googlebar so it will probably be disabled if you install 1.0 RC1.

In regards to RC1 Mozilla state "If you are not interested in active testing and bug reporting, then you should stick with 1.0 PR and upgrade when we release the official Firefox 1.0, presumably on November the 9th."

The final release candidate Firefox 1.0 RC2 has just been released. As with RC1 you should only install this if you like testing software.

Version 1.0 is still scheduled for release on 9th November.

    Re: Firefox 1.0 release date

    And the crashes!

It looks like I'm going to be driven to
    * Cutting and Pasting a PM into Word,
    * editing it there,
    * then Cutting and Pasting back into Firefox before Sending it.

I must have lost three or four long messages by editing within Firefox.

Let's hope the Official Release is more crash-proof, otherwise for all its inadequacies, it will probably be back to IE...

Aw, c'mon to the "traditional" Mozilla (1.7.3) instead! I honestly can't remember the last time mine crashed. Of course, one "problem" is the bundled email, but you don't have to actually use it.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by tony55 on 06-Nov-04 15:51. )</P>I have found Firefox to be very stable, after I ditched TabBrowser Extensions crashes have become very rare. Checking through various Firefox forums I have not found widespread reports of it crashing.

Have you managed to find any pattern as to what is causing the crash or do you get any error messages?

It often seems to happen when I'm trying from one Firefox window editing a PM in the Lounge, and trying to grab a URL from another. I could also be playng RealPlayer for some BBC Radio 3 Early Music in a third window! Perhaps I should work out how to get new windows to open as tabbed, but I can't find that anywhere. I'm just clicking on my desktop Firefox icon to load a new instance, in each case. As usual, perhaps it's just me?!

As I said, the only extension I have loaded is the Googlebar.

Prior to version 1.0RC1 to make full use of tabbed browsing you needed to install one of the tabbed browsing extensions. Version RC1 introduced changes to the options dialog that gives more control over when a new window or a tab is used, though extensions do have more options (I am currently using a beta version of Tabbrowser Preferences)

The most common causes for instability in Firefox are:
A bad extension or theme or extensions conflicting, with only the Googlebar this should not be a problem
Installing one version on top of another using the Windows installer package. If you use this method it is best to uninstall the old version & delete the directory prior to installing a new version. Latest versions include an in-place upgrade option.
Some people have reported problems with the Java plug-in, most of which appear to have been resolved with JRE version 1.5.0

    Re: Firefox 1.0 release date

I had a crash yesterday. The quality agent information said it was my second crash since I had installed Firefox, and that the interval between them was more than a million seconds (I believe they were seconds). I have no idea what caused it, but on the preceding page, only about a third of the graphics loaded, in an article that I believe was in the process of being republished. After restarting the browser, the page worked fine. Weird.

Anyway, the general principle holds true: browser controls are NOT safe for serious text editing, whether in PMs or in posts. The usual culprit is a momentary server glitch, but local crashes are just as destructive....

None of those apply, I think, and I have Java 1.5.0! We'll see what 9 November brings...!

    Re: Firefox 1.0 release date

Perhaps you could simplify matters by not being quite so "cutting edge". I am still running Firefox 0.9 <img src=/S/gramps.gif border=0 alt=gramps width=20 height=20> and Tabbrowser Extensions 1.10.2004061401, and am not experiencing any of the issues that are being reported. I switched to Mozilla about 5 years ago - and ran bleeding edge versions (including nightlies) all the way up to Firefox 0.8. The changes in the last few releases have all been relatively minor and there is no point penalising yourself with "the latest & greatest".

I do wholeheartedly suggest, however, that you get that planet of a brain of yours around configuring tabbed browsing. It does sound like you are using too many separate instances - an IE habit. A dunce like me can't cope with so many simultaneous windows!
