    Re: Freeze!

Kathy, I moved your post here because it is either XP or hardware related (or some other software) AND the posts in the Test Forum EXPIRE in three days. Now, my first question is do you have an antivirus program running and up to date? If so, have you done a recent drive scan with it? Next, how about spyware - do you use any of the "usual" programs for checking your system for malware? Lastly, (for the time being) can you give us an example of a program you'll be using when the problems occur? Hang in there...

    Hi Kathy.

I would agree with Al's thoughts on your problems. It sounds like some sort of spyware / malware issue that's causing the freeze-ups and delays in typing. I would suggest, if you don't already have them, that you get a copy of Adaware se, Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster. Adaware and Spybot will find most of the junk that may be hiding on your system and SpywareBlaster will help to keep it off. All 3 in combination with a good antivirus software package with a subscription for virus definition updates, that is kept up to date, are about the best line of defense against the "evils of the internet".

If you can let us know a bit more detail about the specific nature of your problems and then take a little time to download, install, setup and configure the 3 programs I mentioned. Scan your system with each of them and remove anything that they find (they will do this for you automatically, just follow the prompts) and then post back with the results. I'm sure that you have reached frustration saturation <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>, but don't throw that PC out the window just yet !!!!

    Re: Freeze!

Good points, Doc. One of the reasons I asked about her AV software, as others in the Lounge will remember, is that I USED to be a McAfee user and <!post=this two-year old thread,162728>this two-year old thread<!/post> points out ONE problem that many of us had with McAfee back then - a program called ALOGSERV that caused (sometimes severe) slowdowns in system performance, among which were "typing" non-responsiveness. Ever since I switched to PC-Cillin I haven't kept up with McAfee, but am just pursuing possibilities.
