Recently usde file list (WinXP Of 2003)

Under what conditions is this list updated? When I open a file and do not modify it, the list apparently is not up-dated. Even sometimes when I do change the file, it is not up-dated. Could you clarify, please.

The MRU file list in excel is updated when you open a file from excel (FIle -open). If you open it using explorer or via a macro it is not added to the list.

    1. In Excel 2002 (XP), the MRU list is also updated if you open a workbook from Windows Explorer.

    2. The Workbooks.Open method in Excel 2002 has an argument AddToMru that can be set to True to add the opened workbook to the MRU list. The default value is False, so if you omit this argument, opening a workbook in a macro will not add its name to the MRU list.

I haven't seen the behavior the OP reports in Excel 2002, and I can't find any mention of it in the newsgroups.

I forgot about the addtoMRU list, this is also an optional argument in XL97.

That means that opening a file from the new MRU on the right side of the Window, the one with the blue background, does not set the MRU. Not very logical. Anyway, I will use the MRU list in the Excel window. That makes the MRU update. Thanks.

Aha, you meant the list in the New Workbook task pane. You're correct, that list is not kept up to date during an Excel session, but it will be up to date next time you start Excel. As noted, the MRU list in the File menu is refreshed whenever you open a document.

The New Workbook Task Pane MRU doesn't seem to get updated at all. Is there some separate setting for that MRU?

Do you mean that it isn't updated when you quit, then restart Excel?

I still use Excel 2002; each time I start it, the file list in the New Workbook task pane is the same as the list in the File menu, but the task pane list remains unchanged during the Excel session.

When I use the File menu MUL, both sides are updated. When I open with the New Workbook task pane and then close and re-open Excel, it is not updated. It looks like I have to make changes in the file for it to change position when I use the New Workbook Task pane.

Perhaps a bug in Excel 2003; it does't work that way in Excel 2002 (which I'm using). Can;t find anything about it, though.
