    Don't display icons (XP Pro)

When viewing the contents of a folder in Details view, Win displays an icon to the left of the file name that corresponds to the file type. In folders with lots of files (read that as even about 100), it is a noticeable delay while Win figures out what icon to display for each file. Is there some way to turn off the displaying of the icon? This is on a 2.1 GHz system, so it's not exactly slow.

    TIA

    Fred

Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View - is "Do not cache thumbnails" checked? If so, this may be the problem.

    John,

Nope. "Do not cache thumbnails" is not checked. Just to be sure of what I'm talking about, see attached. The cursor is pointing at what I want to stop displaying. Although the attached shows a folder with only 2 files and the folder displays immediately, a folder with a 100 files slows things down too much.

    Thanks.

Yep - we're both talking about the same thing. As for turning off the icon display, I don't know of any method. If someone else does, I'm sure they will jump in.
