I use tools>message rules>mail to try to block spam, but with no success. The spam is that maddening type that uses various misspellings of offensive words. I have created rules to block these misspellings in the subject line and not to keep them on or download them from the server. But the spam still is delivered.

Then there is that spam that has no recipient--however the heck that is done. I try to block it and I block my own e-mail address.

Try a good Spam filter like Emousetrap and you won't see ANY of that garbage anymore, just mail from the people YOU want to see.

The software Bob mentions is easy to create and use because it pays no attention to content, and instead only cares about the sender. If you want to receive mail from senders without your pre-approval (or making them verify that they are human), you have a tough job of keeping up with the constant changes in how spam is crafted. You either can use a product that frequently updates itself from the web, or one that makes it easy for you to train it to recognize new spam, or settle for an approach that just doesn't work very well. I'm using SAProxy (free version), which is out of date and requires frequent training to keep it effective. There are many products out now, mostly in the the $20-40 range, some bundled with antivirus or firewall products, some built in to mail software, and some stand-alone. Another option is to switch to an ISP that filters for you (although this can create other headaches).

I guess I got off the point a bit, but I doubt that the built-in features of Outlook Express will make your life much less spammy.

I use the free versions of Zone Alarm and AVG, plus my server offers Postini. Most of the spam is e-mail directed to www.rootsweb.com, but comes to me as the administrator of a list. For some reason, the spam is focusing on only one list, and I administer three! I forward every single blasted spam e-mail to Rootsweb and Postini, but they cannot seem to stop this flow of spam. This is somewhat understandable as the perpetrators of this spam keep changing their names, e-mail addresses, subject lines, misspelling key words in a variety of ways.

I set up Mousetrap as directed. Now I keep getting the following message from OE: "The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.hal-pc.org', Server: 'localhost', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E."

Any suggestions?

If you open mousetrap and click on the accounts tab, then double click on the account name line, it will bring up an accounts setup page where you can fill in the incoming and outgoing user names and passwords for your account. Also there is a box to check to enable the account. This information should be the same as your email account.

You can also contact the support team at emousetrap.com for speciafic setup questions, they are very helpful and can answer any other setup questions you may have. once you have it set up, you will love the results !
