won't save file names properly

Gasp! A question about MS PD 2000!! Yes, I still like to use this application for picture editing because I am fairly comfortable with it. But it has developed an annoying problem, which has been ongoing for several months now. My computer is running WinXP Pro SP2. I am running the app. in Win98/WinME compatibility This problem developed long before the SP2 was added. I have been trying to solve it but to no avail so...................my question!

When I finish with my picture, I choose "save as", give it a name and complete the process. But when I want to open it again, I see that it has reduced my file name to just the first letter. (example: Named it "Bananas", and it will reduce the file name to just "B"). I can rename the file within WinExplorer and it will stick but I would like to have the ability to name it properly when saving the file in the first place. I have tried the two choices of fixing the application by using "repair it" & "reinstall it" through the "add/remove dialog box but that hasn't helped. I haven't tried removing and reloading the application since everything else is working fine. I was hoping not to have to do this - but I will if there isn't a better suggestion. So - I am curious to know if anyone would have a solution to offer?

ps: Later in the day - I decided to try uninstalling and reinstalling, to see if that would correct my problem. BUT it didn't help a thing. It picks up all of my previous settings so I think there has to be something going on in the registry - that sets the size of the file name perhaps? But to one letter?? I wouldn't know where to look for that kind of information!! So again, any help will be appreciated.

    Hi Skitterbug

You may have one of these problems without a known solution. I have tried searching the web and newsgroups/forums on this issue using several search engines. I can find several instances of people reporting the same problem but nobody had a solution. The problem may not necessarily be related to the registry, some programs can not run on XP even in compatibility mode. As this problem does not occur for everybody running Windows XP it could have been caused when a system file was updated when Office or Windows was upgraded or patched, causing compatibility problems between Photodraw and that file.

You may have to get comfortable with using Corel Paint Shop Pro 9

Thanks for trying Tony! I have been hunting in the Microsoft groups and the web too and like you, I have found several instances of people asking for a solution to this very same problem. But there wasn't ever a resolution to the problem offered by anyone. So, I may as well get used to it. I like using the program enough that I will and bear it for awhile at least.

I am unhappy that Corel bought out PSP as noted in another forum. I received an email from Jasc today advising Corel's acquisition. The beginning part of their email went as follows: "We are very pleased to share some exciting news with you that will deliver immediate benefits to valued Jasc customers. Corel Corporation, one of the industry's top ten packaged software vendors, today acquired Jasc Software, Inc.

This acquisition will yield real benefits to all Paint Shop customers. We intend to put the powerful R&D resources of the newly-combined companies behind the popular Paint Shop family, ensuring that next-generation Paint Shop products will continue to flourish. Finally, we will continue to provide service and support to all Paint Shop customers. Our primary goal is to ensure that your critical needs are effectively met."

We shall see what happens, won't we?

Anyway, I have just my own topic! But I guess since it is my topic, I am allowed!!

     again for your reply!

I to am disappointed that PSP was bought out by Corel.

Have you tried the replacement for Photodraw, MS Digital Image Pro or Suite ?
I have been using it as well as PSP and if Corel messes with PSP I will be going that way, unless something better comes along.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: won't save file names properly

    Hi Dave,

No, I haven't tried the MS Digital Image software. for the link! I will give it a look see.

Currently, I use PSP V.9 although I am not very good with it yet! and PhotoDraw2000. I also use IrfanView and MS Picture Manager, that came with MS FrontPage 2003, depending on what it is I am trying to accomplish. And of course even the Paint application can be very handy too!! Whatever it takes. There doesn't seem to be that perfect software with everything I want in it - at least not at the price I want to pay! I am just an amateur! Sure hope Corel doesn't mess up PSP too much! I really enjoy the Animation Shop and would like to see it expanded.

Hope you have a good weekend! again for your replies!

    Leo,

I am sorry I never saw your question and I didn't find a solution for the problem of file naming. I find now that along with Photodraw, I use the free IrfanView lots for adjusting file size of graphics, cropping, etc. It can be found here. The current version of it is 3.97 which is newer than mine so I may have to investigate it to see what has changed!

Re: won't save file names properly

I was sorry to have missed his post so I can only hope that he returns sometime and sees my reply. I doubt that he will resolve the file naming problem since it seems that numerous folks were asking for a solution. MS dropped the product so I don't believe they are interested in a solution either. There are plenty of newer and better applications out there to use but I still like this one for the cropping choices. I think that Paint Shop Pro is complicated and I haven't really mastered too much of it yet. Guess I will have to get serious about using it!

I wouldn't lose any sleep over Leo's problem. That was his only post in the Lounge.

I know what you are talking about when you say you are reluctant to switch from a program you are familiar with and try something new and seemingly more complicated. Believe it or not, I used to use PowerPoint for most of my graphic manipulation tasks. I first tried PSP back when it was a download and then got a bit crazy and bought the full version of Photoshop. It took me a little while to get familiar enough with it to feel comfortable using it almost exclusively. What helped immensley were the online tutorials I found and printed out to keep next to me while I worked. I still keep the folder of them in my files. Take a look at this Google search for Paint Shop Pro tutorials. I'm sure you will find that with a little guidance the programs are a whole lot less intimidating. Get serious if you must. But have fun with it too !!

Re: won't save file names properly

    Thanks Doc Watson!

I appreciate the nudge toward getting more involved with PSP and yes, I'll have fun working with it. It's trying to figure out all the layers and such that can really confuse me. As with anything, starting with the simple stuff first and working toward the more complicated projects is always the best approach but I tend to get impatient sometimes and that leads to frustration because things don't always turn out as I expect they should. What's nice with a computer is the results can be deleted and starting over can be done quickly! Thanks for all of the links! But don't be surprised if I return with questions!

Questions ??? That's what I'm here for !!! No need to thank me for the nudge. It's just job security. The more I can confuse you the more questions you'll have and my job here in the Lounge will be secure !!!

Seriously though ... just take your time and start with something you feel comfortable with. Try to read a tutorial on the tools available in PSP & how they work. That will probably help you the most in the beginning.

Besides Doc, on your current income (got that from Google <grin>) you cannot afford to do without the s you received from the lounge <snicker>....
Be happy, couldn't let that slip by
