    Comments from Word 2003 viewed in 2000 (Word 2003

    Has anyone seen anything about changed comment formats in Word 2002/2003?

    We have a machine here running Word 2003 and have noticed that comments added to the file when using Word 2003 cause a problem when viewed in Word 2000 (not in Word 2002). The problem is that the initials of the person who made the comment are made visible [inside square brackets] when the file is viewed in Word 2000. The comment is normal apart from that oddity though. Other comments added in Word 2000 don't behave this way.

    It's kind of like Word is thinking out aloud - and we didn't really want to hear it.

    Further investigation revealed the solution - run from the Word 2000 machine
    Sub HideCommentRefs()
    Dim comm As Comment
    For Each comm In ActiveDocument.Comments
    comm.Reference.Font.Hidden = True
    Next comm
    End Sub

    Re: Comments from Word 2003 viewed in 2000 (Word 2

    I've never tried that. If I recall correctly, the Word 2000 way was to use a yellow highlight and then a bracketed notation such as [JFS1] which was formatted as hidden text. In Word 2002, there are tall, narrow red parentheses around the comment, and no bracketed notation. So when Word 2000 opens it, it adds the bracketed notation into the text but fails to format it as hidden text?

    Thats right.

    Word 2003 has the same non-printing brackets indicating that a comment is there. When you open a file in Word 2000, which contains comments added in Word 2003, the commented range appears with a pale yellow highlight but there is some new, non-hidden text with the commenters initials following the commented range. I haven't tested this going from Word 2002 back to Word 2000 but it might also happen there.
