Documents in use (Word 97 Win XP Sp2)

I have a user with a standalone machine run XP. He has moved a lot of old Word documents onto this machine. He is running his original copy of Word 97. If he goes into Word and opens documents it works fine - however if he double-clicks on a file in My Documents it comes up with a message advising him that the file is already in use by (his name) and does he want to make a copy?
Has anyone any idea what might be going on here?

Re: Documents in use (Word 97 Win XP Sp2)

First, let him try the following:
    - Close (all instances of) Word.
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type winword /regserver
    - Press Enter.
This should restore the file associations for Word.

If that doesn't help, let him check the following:
    - Start Windows Explorer
    - Select Tools | Folder Options...
    - Activate the File Types tab.
    - Locate the DOC item in the list of registered file types.
    - Select it, then click Advanced...
    - Select Open in the list of actions (it should be bold, indicating it is the default action)
    - Click Edit...
    - Make sure that the "Use DDE" check box is ticked, and that the items below it are filled in as follows:

DDE Message: [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("% 1")] (note: no space between % and 1)
    Application: WinWord
    Topic: System

    - Click OK until back in Explorer.
    - Try to open a document from Explorer.

If that doesn't help either, let him take a look at Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000)<!/post>.

Thanks Hans, resetting the file associations did the trick.
