    Google Desktop Search

Newly released, Google Desktop Search provides a search for the "full text of your email, files, viewed web pages, and chats."

I installed this about an hour ago and even though it hasn't completed it's one time indexing of my computer it is still returning really useful results.

    Re: Google Desktop Search

One caveat I just discovered on the Google help page: "Google Desktop Search is designed to run on computers using Windows 2000 (Service Pack 3 or above) or Windows XP and Internet Explorer 5.0 or above."

    Dennis

I put it on on Friday and have been fairly impressed so far in the way it can find in fractions of a second on my hard disk what would take me ages to find by conventional methods.

    Downsides seem to be:
security - lots of stuff about this everywhere!
disk space required for its index - quite a lot
no obvious reindexing - I deleted almost all my OE Inbox and Sent messages yesterday, but it still shows 630 present when there are only actually about 40! (and no, they are not in deleted!).

It hasn't crashed, and it's staying -- unless I find a good reason for getting rid of it!

I wonder how it compares to Wilbur, mentioned in <post#=20401>post 20401</post#>. Wilbur allows updating indexing &, on my machine, updates it in seconds.

I have Google and Lookout on one computer and Copernic on a different one. From my experience, basically using it for searching email- Google wins.

    Hi Zave:
I noticed that you mention Copernic & Lookout. Have you compared Google to Wilbur?

    Re: Google Desktop Search

I saw a demo of this at the DigitalLife show in New York last week. Can anyone comment on how much disk space is required to index Outlook PST files? For example, say you have a 200MB PST file, about how big is Google's index file for that? (Then I multiply by 5. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> )

    Re: Google Desktop Search

The data seems to be stored in multiple files in Documents and SettingsUsernameLocal SettingsApplication DataGoogle

I have 267MBytes of google data to index 21,000 emails and 6,000 files. My PST file sizes are 233 MBytes, 86 MBytes and 75 MBytes.

    Re: Google Desktop Search

I have tried Google Desktop Search twice and removed it twice. I have found that it misses files in its search that I know I have on the computer. I

    Re: Google Desktop Search

I don't, but if you search for *.*, but limit the search to the date you indexed & make the size, say, >10MB, you should be able to find it readily.

Try the path listed in Stuart's post, although maybe the uninstaller kindly removed it...
