PC powers up ok, but can't reboot (XP/SP2)

I recently loaded XP on my laptop (previously it ran 2000). Now it works fine, but always hangs if you try to reboot it for any reason. If you shut it down and start it up it seems to work ok. Any ideas? I find it bizarre and although it is something I can live with, I would love to see if fixed!

Susan

Have you looked on the manufacturer's support website for any BIOS Update which might be relevant to this XP problem?

Susan,
Also check Control Panel> Power Options & System standby options.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried both options - I upgraded the bios, but it doesn't cure this problem. Could it be that the bios is not updated correctly since the reboot hangs?

Susan,
There is a mention of this problem in the MSKB at System Hangs
It advises to check your BIOS settings to disable APM or Advanced Power Management in the BIOS for XP.
Check out that article and if it's still NG, search the Knowledge Base for similar problems.

Re: PC powers up ok, but can't reboot (XP/SP2)

Thanks, I thought there would be light at the end of the tunnel. However in following what the KB article said, I found that my power system options did not include a tab for APM. I wonder if this is where the problem lies? Any ideas where my APM tab has gone? I'm just curious now. Although my laptop hangs on rebooting not shutting down (basically the dots in the line under the windows logo stop going back and forth and the machine is hung!) I thought the problem might have been similar. I have a replacement computer now so am donating this one to a friend. I just would have liked to have solved the problem for her first!

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Have you gone to the OEM's web site and downloaded the updates as asked in <post#=417626>post 417626</post#>, the BIOS is not the only file that needs to be updated..
You will find that MOST of the laptop problems will go away when needed files for the new OS are installed.

What make and model is your laptop?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I assume you mean in the BIOS?
Could depend on what BIOS you have in the machine. I have Award and it does have APM.

Re: PC powers up ok, but can't reboot (XP/SP2)

I did go to the sony vaio website and downloaded and installed all the update files available. Following their instructions I upgraded the BIOS by putting the files on a floppy and installing them from booting up the computer, but it didn't fix the problem. The other problem is that it no longer charges the battery though it knows it is there. From this description does it sound like I didn't install the BIOS correctly? Should I try it again? Unfortunately I've passed the computer on, but any suggestions and I will forward them to the knew caretaker.

The computer I have (well had) is a Sony Vaio PCG-FX109K.

(Edited by DaveA on 18-Oct-04 07:33. Added comment about 109K)
When I upgraded my Sony PCG-FX150 I had to install ALL of the updates.

Go to PCG-FX100 > Software Updates and Drivers

There are 25 of them, check them out, you just may need a few or all of them.

Edit,
I think there was a listing for 100K, you might check for those instead.

I found a command file included in one Microsoft program. It restarts your computer - nothing else. Maybe it will be helpful.

I've passed all these suggestions on to my unfortunate (but fortunate - as it is better than she had) friend. I'll let you know if any of them work!

I appreciate your time and effort. Thanks.
