    mailmerge issue (Word 2000)

I have a problem which I never saw in Word 97.
A perfectly straightforward form letter gets its merge data from a .csv file
A filter is in force in the Merge Options box, only people with a "y" in a certain field are to be included.
The fields have these names, in this order, done as a header row in the .csv list:

Word is telling you that one of the lines in the .CSV file doesn't have enough fields - you likely have a garbage record at the end of the file, perhaps with non-printing characters. Look at the file in Word with the special characters option turned on so you can see the Paragraph marks, and delete any lines at the end that shouldn't be there. Also look for lines where the Paragraph character doesn't exist. Hopefully it will be one of those things, or something similar.

    Hi, Rudi -
    >>Is this correct or just a typo....should it not be <_title1>??? Do you have a field called <_title2> in the source data file?
    This is correct.
It's to handle politely people like clergymen, where the address might say 'The Revd....' but the letter would start 'Dear Fr. .....'
Hence two title fields, mostly identical but sometimes not.

Wendell - I'll examine your reply when I get the chance. Will also try it as an .xls or something.
But it always worked ok with Word 97!

    Thanks, both.

    Re: mailmerge issue (Word 2000)

    Wendell,
Have looked at the data source again and can't find anything wrong. Have overcome the problem by copying only the records and fields I wanted into a new spreadsheet and taking it from there.
The data happens to come from a Works for Windows database, saved as .csv, and I've never had problems in the past, either with WordPro or Word 97.
    Progress, I suppose....
    Thanks anyway.

Another trick when fighting with files like that is to open it in Excel - that will often make the problem obvious. Sorry I didn't think of that approach before. If you have time you might try opening it and see what you get.
