    Boxes within boxes (2002 SP3)

    Hi there,
I want to create a scrore sheet for a quiz with a small box to be used to indicate if a team has played theyir joker on that round and a slightly bigger shaded box to hold a running total.

I have tried using a table and then a couple of Autoshape boxes within the cells.

Apart from the time that it takes to position them al, I note that, although they look aligned with the cell borders on the screen, when they pint, they are often slightly offset, which doesn't look particularly nice.

Anyone got any ideas how to achieve the desired effect?

    Hi Paul

You can use Excel to achieve this.

Yeah, but I was hoping to keep the whole package within Word.

The same works in Word too - see attachment (I copied the table from your Excel workbook straight into a Word document)

Re: Boxes within boxes (2002 SP3)

Well... Everything was going fine until...

I now have a table with lovely little square boxes within the cells.

    Until...

I try to merge sets of 3 cells vertically on the left so as to show the round numbers properly. As soon as I try to merge the lower 2 of the 3 cells, the table width changes.

I have attached the table so far.

I have merged the first 2 rows of the first 3 numbers. If you try to merge the last 2 rows of any of the number cells, the width changes.

Any ideas why, and more to the point, how to stop it happening?

    Hi Paul

Not sure what was going wrong for you, I had no problems merging the cells in the left column.

Re: Boxes within boxes (2002 SP3)

Well if you look at page 1 of this attachment, you will see the table once I have merged one set of cells. Page 2 contains the unmerged one.

In the doc that you sent back, the shaded boxes now have a vertical white line in them. If I try to merge them, I get the same problem with the width.

Could you try merging all the shaded boxes, to try to get rid of the vertical lines?

    TIA

Yep, that looks great. Wonder why it all goes screwy when I try it?

Many thanks for your assistance. I wish I could have done it!

One of the properties for Tables (under Table>Properties...>Options...) is to become all distorted when you insert new content. Or should I say, to adjust column widths automatically, just the way HTML tables are adjusted by web browsers. Since you probably prefer the pre-Word 2000 style, where the user sets the column widths and Word didn't adjust them for you, turn off that option and see if that helps.

Re: Boxes within boxes (2002 SP3)

If you mean the option that says: "Automatically resize to fit contents", then that was the first thing that I set off before even starting to build the table. So that isn't it unfortunately (and would't that setting have travelled with the table for when Tony did the cell merge for me anyway?).

What I didn't report was that I sometimes got a single row doing strange width things, when I was setting the individual borders. I had to keep saving and closing the document and re-opening it setting more internal borders bit by bit.

I was going to ask Tony what version of Word he was using?

    Hi Paul:
I used Word 2000, but have placed the old "Cell height & width..." command on the table context menu. By selecting the table, going to the row tab, & choosing "Auto" for the height, I'm able to adjust the table. You could do the same. The command is under Tools/Customize.../All Commands/TableFormatCell. You can also change your context menus. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFm...nmentProbs.htm
    Cheers,
