Outlook 2002 keeps locking up (Outlook 2002)

Outlook 2002 is driving me crazy. With increasing frequency it locks up and has to be closed via Task Manager. Any Outlook windows open just go blank. Often this happens right in the middle of typing an e-mail. For the record:

    1) I am NOT using Word as my Outlook editor.
    2) I have run the "Detect and Repair" and SCANPST ("Inbox Repair Tool") utilities frequently. Sometimes they provide relief for a few hours or days -- and sometimes they don't.
    3) I have faithfully kept up with all Windows XP and Office XP software updates. (The problems precede XP SP2.)
    4) My PST file is around 500 Mb in size.
    5) I have faithfully kept current on all antivirus and fireware (both McAfee) updates and run an AV scan once a week.
    6) Ditto Ad-Aware.
    7) I'm not part of any Exchange server.

Through experimentation, I have learned that the problem will happen without any other app open, so (unless the culprit is some background program like my AV, firewall, Windows Instant Messenger, etc) the finger can't be pointed to something outside of Outlook. And the problem usually (90% of the time) occurs when I'm hooked up to a network (like at home, where we operate behind a hardware router/firewall, or in hotels). At work, where all my connections are dial-up, the problem didn't occur, but now that's no longer true.

Any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try turning off automatic mail retrieval (this is in your Send and Receive Groups settings, I believe) and retrieve mail manually using F9. If this works, but the workaround is intolerable, perhaps we can find a way to toggle it on and off more easily. If it doesn't work, hmmm, what add-ins do you run, if any?

Is there any relationship to messages either being recieved, or composed, or sent, which contain large attachments? (We're fishing here,or at least eliminating where there aren't any fish. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

For a while I, too, thought that by using the "Send/Receive Settings || Disable Scheduled Send/Receive" I could keep this from happening. But lately it's been happening even in "disabled" mode. As for add-ins -- I'm not certain what you mean, unless... well, I do have two non-Outlook icons present on the task bar. One is for Chapura Conduit Manager (version 1.0.2, used to synch Outlook with my Palm). The other is for McAfee E-mail scan, part of McAfee VirusScan Pro, version 8.

I would think that if mail is not being checked, VirusScan should be dormant, and that if you are not actively HotSync'ing, Chapura should be snoozing, so perhaps neither of those is the culprit. You could check for other Add-ins in two dialogs buried under Tools>Options... >Other tab>Advanced Options... button: Add-In Manager and COM Add-ins.

Drilling down to the Add-In Manager as you suggested, I found three add-in items:

    McAfee VirusScan Outlook Email Scanner
    Conduit Manager
    Exchange Extensions property pages

There's a short description given of the third item listed: "Out of Office, Folder Design, Forms" To the best of my knowledge, I didn't do anything to add the third item. Is this some sort of Outlook 2002 default add-in? All three of the items listed above are checked.

Oops. In my last post I had forgotten to check on the COM Add-ins. There is one, though it is unchecked:

    MapPoint Office Add-In.

Is your conduit the PocketMirror Standard product from Chapura? If so, you might want to update it to the current version, 3.1.6, from here. None of those add-ins should cause you problems.
