Changing Field Types programmatically (Access 2003)

Our main company database has a field in text format. I download several fields, including that one, to an Access database to perform various manipulations and do reporting.

The "meat" of that field is numeric. I scrub the alpha characters and spaces out of the field and leave the numbers.

Currently, I am then opening the table in design view and changing the field format to numeric (integer). Afterward, I can do calculations such as averages.

Is there a way to change the field type programatically? I'l like to do all of my scrubbing and calculating as part of one operation, without human intervention. Is this possible?

    Thanks!

why change the field, when you can use the Val() fuction to get the numeric value to do you calculations with.
