    ping but cannot see

after much trouble, have small peer-to-peer network running (thanks to posts from here) using static ip. host is XP desktop, client is 98SE laptop. network using Homeplug usb devices and ics. both computers can ping each other by name and ip, both have access to internet (thru satellite). desktop sees laptop on network neighborhood but laptop does not see desktop on network neighborhood. XP firewall is turned off. have read several threads but i don't see an answer. any thoughts?

Do you have exactly the same username and password on both computers?

You need to either enable the guest account on the Windows XP system (not recommended) or use the same username and password on both.

    Re: ping but cannot see

A couple of things to try...

    On the Windows XP system
Right Click my computer and select Manage
On the left hand pane open up Shared Folders and chose shares
    What shares are showing?

Can you verify that both computers have the same Workgroup name?
(On Windows 98 this is under control panel > System > Computer Name, I can't remember where it is on Windows 98

    Re: ping but cannot see

workgroup on both is "HOME". all folders and printers show under "Shared Folders". double checked the 98 machine and it's c: drive is also shared. by the way, neither computer sees the other now. i believe this whole thing started once i enabled ics on the XP host. i can still ping both and have internet access, just not able to share files and/or printers either way.

If you are absolutely sure that there are no firewalls involved then I am nearly out of ideas.

The easiest solution might be to just install NetBeui protocol on both systems.
