Run-in Headings & Keep with Next (Word 2K/SR-3)

I just learned something & wonder if anyone has had the same experience.

If you have run-in headings (that use a hidden paragraph mark in the heading to start the next paragraph, e.g. body text, on the same line), you should change the heading style to turn off "Keep with Next". Otherwise, you may have huge gaps on pages, as a heading style attempts to stay on the same page with all the rest of the paragraphs. Apparently, Word trys to keep both the heading style (that has the property) & the following paragraph with the next unhidden paragraph mark.

If you place an extra paragraph mark after the body text paragraph, both the heading & it's body text paragraph will "move up" to the preceding page, if there's room.

I don't know if the same is true with later versions when you use a style separator.

Note the large gap in the attached document on the second page when hidden text is turned off. If you change the heading 1 style to turn off "Keep with next" or if you place a paragraph mark after the body text paragraph, you'll notice how the paragraphs labelled Important & volunteers moves up to the first page.

The style separator in Word 2002 shows the same behavior.

Thanks, Hans. I'll have to add, to my bag of tricks, having some heading styles without the "keep with next" property, if I'm using run-in headings.
