    File New Dialog Tabs

If you go to File New ... you are shown a General tab that contains the list of templates stored in the Workgroup Templates folder and User Templates folder listed in File Locations.

On one of my sites, where they are running Windows 98 and Office 97 the users see multiple General tabs. These tabs are duplicates of each other and contain the same files. Some users see two General tabs and some see three. I would expect them to see only one!

I thought that there might be multiple Normal.dot files and shortcuts to the Workgroup templates folder but this doesn't appear to be the case.

    Any ideas?

There may be sub-directories in the user templates folder with the name "Templates" which can cause the "General" tab to appear multiple times.

    Re: File New Dialog Tabs

    Hi Karen,

What it took for me to get this was a shortcut named "General" to another templates folder. (In Word 2000 a folder named "Templates" didn't do it. It would show up as a "Templates" tab.)

If I simply put a folder containing templates into my Templates folder, and named that Folder "General" instead of putting a shortcut in the Templates folder, it generated an error if I tried to Open the folder during the File New dialog.

    Hope this is some help.

Hi Chas, I thought a shortcut might be the answer but I have't been able to find one, so it's still a mystery.

This might also be a symptom of a corrupt registry key.
