    JAVA Problems (Windows XP SP2)

I am trying to use Live Chat at Iomega to get support and every time I submit my request I get an error message stating that This browser does not support Java or its use is currently disabled. You may be able to enable Java by lowering your browser security level. I lowered security and turned off the SP2 pop-up blocker as well as my own pop-up blocker but no matter what I do I keep getting the same error message. The Iomega site says it needs to install Right Now Collaboration and I select install but nothing happens. I know this is probably all due to SP2 but I sure would like to know how to temporarily disable some of the security when I need to. BTW, I did try setting the Security to Low but that didn't even help.

    TIA

Are you using the MS VM or the Sun Java run time environment? If you are still using the MS version, it might be time to switch to the Sun version. You can find it here . Download and install the J2SE 5.0 JRE. After installation, go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and under the Java (Sun) setting, select "use JRE 1.5" and unselect anything under the Microsoft VM.
Another thing you might want to try is adding the Iomega site to your list of Trusted Sites (Tools>Internet Options>Security>Trusted Sites>Sites). Adding sites to the "Trusted Sites" zone usually lowers security settings enough to accomplish what you are trying to do.

    John,
I added Iomega to my trusted sites list and I stil got the error. So, now I need to understand about MS VM. I'm not really sure what it is. And I looked in Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and there isn't currently a Java section and I don't see anything referring to MS VM?

If you haven't installed the Sun version, you won't see a Java section. You will see the section for the MS VM (which MS licensed from Sun) as per Dave's screen shot. As for installing the Right Now Collaboration, if I remember correctly, you may have to hold down the Control key while you click on Install Now (one of SP2's security features).

I don't have the Microsoft VM section at all. I'm using IE 6.0.2 SP2. And I did try holding the Control key and still nothing happened. As far as the Right Now Collaboration, I conversed with them from my work PC and that problem has been solved. Now I am just curious why I don't have the VM section.

Because it has NOT been installed. You do NOT need it if you have the Sun Java engine.

    Dave,
forgive my ignorance, but what is the Sun Java engine? I went to their site but can't seem to find out what it really is. Are you saying that Microsoft has a Java engine but Sun's is better? Am I opening myself up to other problems by installing it? Am I making myself more vulnerable to outside "attacks"?

Re: JAVA Problems (Windows XP SP2)

    Sherry,
The Java programming language was invented by Sun. It needs what is called a virtual machine (VM) to run on a PC. MS had licensed the Sun VM and made some proprietary changes to it. That became the subject of a lawsuit. Sun won and MS can no longer distribute their version which by the way is now several years and versions old. If you want to access a site that tells says you need Java then you must install a VM. It is possible that you may find a site that uses some of the proprietary stuff that MS added. However, in general Sun's is the best option now because of the age of the MS version.
