    Monitor Drivers

I just installed Windows 2000, upgrading from Windows 98SE. Everything works fine, except the monitor. It loads just the "default monitor" and the properties button (under settings, advanced, monitor) is grayed out so I can't update it. So I am stuck with a 800 x 600 resolution, and only 16 colors. I have checked the Knowledge Base, but all their instructions tell me to go into the properties and upgrade the driver. However, I can't get to the properties. I have sent an e-mail to the manufacturer asking for help. The monitor is not on the list of approved equipment for Windows 2000. I have also searched here and found some people with what seems to be same problem, but didn't really find a solution. Someone said something about updating the BIOS, but I have no idea how to do that.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks, as always,
    Tia

The FAQ's on the Envision site (near the bottom of the page) seem to suggest that this is a video card driver problem in Windows 2000. Do you have the latest drivers for your particular adapter?

What graphic card do you have and have you down loaded the OEM drivers for Win2K and installed them?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Monitor Drivers

I don't know what my graphic card is, but I'll try and find out and see if I can upgrade the drivers, or maybe get a new card and install it. Thanks for the link to the FAQ page, I didn't check there. This gives me some direction to go, I'll let you know what happens.

I suggest you download, install and run Belarc Advisor which usually does a fair job of telling you what hardware and software you've got inside your PC, including graphics card and monitor. Saves having to get the screwdriver or hammer out to open the case...!!

    Re: Monitor Drivers

Yeah, I did that, but it reads just the default driver that Windows 2000 says it is using. I will have to open my case, or check with the shop that built it for me to see if they have any idea of what brand this one is. I checked the receipt, but no brand of graphic card is listed, just that one is installed.

Thanks again for all the ideas. I'll let you know how this turns out.

    Re: Monitor Drivers

You should be able to identify your video adapter through Device Manager. Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.
