Slow opening images from desktop (SP2)

Had a problem for a while now where if I try to open an image on my Desktop, whether it's JPEG, GIF or whatever, by double-clicking and using Windows Picture & Fax Viewer it takes aaaaaaaages to open. If I right-click and choose "Open With" Photo Editor or MS Paint it opens instantly. It just took 10 seconds to display a 6k GIF image! The strange thing is that images in any other folders work fine. Just created a new folder on my Desktop, moved the images into there and they open straight away. I know the easy option is to set another program as the default image viewer but I want to use Picture Viewer! Just as a note, this hasn't happened as a result of installing SP2 but it's doing my head in! <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>

Are you sure they aren't really web images that Windows is trying to update before viewing? What does Properties 'say' if you right click the image?

Properties tells me: "Type of file: JPEG Image"
