how to know about web server errors

I'm running a critical web app and we've had a few nasty experiences with downtimes for various reasons. they want me to go in and check the system daily to ensure it is functioning, which I can do, but will generate test records to the db in the course of testing the system. and, in any case, the system is too complicated to fully QA test daily.

What I'd like to do instead is devise a way for the server to send me an email when any page in the system fails with a 'page not found' error at least. obviously, if all my code is functioning as expected, that might be enough, but I'd like to expand things to cover any other typical errors... but the basic nut is I'd like the system to tell me that a 404 not found happened.

I can use CDONTS and all that just fine, so I was wondering if it's possible to catch errors in IIS via ASP in order to generate some e-mail notice to myself when things go awry (which never happens!!)

I know you can replace the default 404 page with something else but I'm more interested in catching the error when it happens in IIS and getting a notification that way.

    TIA

I can't answer your question, but if the default page is an ASP, perhaps you can code your solution there. Or, in large type, write CALL STEVE NOW! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I'm working on it now. in IIS, I'll define the 404 not found to an asp page that should (using CDONTs) send me an email everytime the page runs. I'll need to find out if IIS is smart enough to provide directory-level support for custom pages....

If that works, then problem is solved. and I DON'T give out my phone number! <img src=/S/blackteeth.gif border=0 alt=blackteeth width=20 height=20>

    Try this:
    http://www.nagios.org/

It monitors systems and services (ie httpd, ftp, dns, etc)

We use it at home and work... Its a bit of a pain in the butt to initially get running but, after that, its solid.

thanks but this is a state agency running Win/IIS. I think my little solution may work fine for the moment (waiting to see if they will be able to make the requested change on the webserver).
