Slow Navigation in Office XP (2002, SP3)

I note that with any of the applications of Office XP, if I must navigate to a specific directory (folder) to save a file, there is a long time during which the Office application searches for the location. If I use a saved Favorite location, the time is almost instantaneous. Unfortunately, I cannot always use saved Favorite locations.

This seems like this may be a problem in the indexing service, but I really don't know. At times this can be frustrating, particularly if I'm on the phone navigating through a tree.

Any suggestions on how this lengthy navigation time can be shortened would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Bob:
There can be more than one cause, but here are a few things that come to mind. First, if you have Norton anti-virus, that you disable the Office plug-in. Norton will still scan files. McAfee or Inoculan may also cause problems; see <!mskb=821246>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 821246<!/mskb>.

Next, if you use Outlook, make sure that Journaling is turned off (Tools/Options/Preferences/Journal Options). This "feature" slows things down immensely.

Also, make sure that Find Fast in the Control Panel is turned off.
    Hope this helps,

Re: Slow Navigation in Office XP (2002, SP3)

Thanks for your information, Phil. It is appreciated. I did try to disable the Office plug-in for Norton antivirus, however, I saw no difference whatsoever. I checked Journaling and it is off, actually. My Windows version (XP, SP2) does not appear to have a "Find Fast" option. However, I recall in the past that I turned off Indexing. The interesting thing there was that Quicken 2004 stopped picking up its data file! Quicken apparently REQUIRES indexing to be ON. Go figure!!

So in the end, I still have the problem, such as it is. Anything that is placed in my Favorites is found almost instantly. It's the locations that are not that take a long time. For instance I was sending a file to a friend yesterday. I had saved it in a Temp directory. Drilling down to that location took Outlook a good 45 seconds.

It may be that it's just time for my annual cleanup of the disk, i.e, format and reinstall. I usually do that during the holidays when things calm down.

Thanks again for your thoughts. I very much appreicate your effort.

XP has an indexing service. Find Fast was in previous Windows versions. However indexing can be set on a folder by folder basis. Maybe that's the reason for the behavior.
